How to build a better buffer

While Roaring Brook Lake is considered a healthy lake by most standards, very small shifts in the lake’s chemical balance can quickly create problems. When AJ Reyes, our lake manager, gave a full report on the lake to the Putnam Valley district office last month, residents asked how they could have an impact on preventing that outcome. Reyes recommended two important tactics residents could do: clean out their septic system regularly (tips here), and plant long-rooted plants along the shoreline of the lake if they have a lake-facing home. Cornell University provided a simple two-page guide on how to build that buffer:
