Tomorrow’s meeting is at 9:30am on Children’s Beach.

We hope you all had a pleasant and relaxing Fourth of July!

Please join us for the POA meeting tomorrow morning with Town Supervisor Jackie Annabi as our guest speaker. Bring all your burning questions about our town.

State of the Lake

On June 24, 19 residents of the RBL District gathered in Town Hall as A.J. Reyes, our Lake Manager, presented the 7th Annual RBL “State of the Lake” Presentation. A.J. showed data from studies he performed in 2022 of RBL water quality and aquatic plant species and density. He discussed the data’s implications, with comparisons to previous years, as well as comparisons to threshold acceptable values and optimal values for lakes.

There was good news: water quality parameters were good in 2022. And good clarity and nutrient levels led to very few toxic algae blooms, no beach closures, and generally good swimming and boating. A.J. warned, though, that since the carp numbers are declining, Roaring Brook Lake will likely have nuisance aquatic plant growth soon. The next aggressive invader will likely be Eurasian milfoil. He feels that it will be helpful for RBL residents to begin the conversation early about how to manage nuisance plant growth before the situation is dire.

Finally, A.J. spoke about polluting nutrients (phosphorus especially) from the watershed. He described a pilot program he has begun to observe whether the phosphorus-absorbing compound Eutrosorb placed in bags in the major inlet of the lake, could effectively lower phosphorus in the lake. A.J. took numerous thoughtful questions from the audience and once again reminded residents of the things that they can do on their own properties: pump septic tanks regularly, ideally every 3 years; plant deep-rooted buffer plantings at the lake’s edge; minimize hardscape and grass; and manage stormwater runoff with rain gardens and other green infrastructure.

Did you miss the meeting? A.J. will be back to answer questions at the RBLPOA Community Meeting on Children’s Beach on September 23 at 9:30am. And watch the video of the meeting here.
